If you’re a webmaster and you have a WordPress blog or two (or 20!) you most certainly have experience with comment spam. It sucks, right. Don’t worry – it’s not hopeless – I have a couple of solutions I think you’ll like!

Turning comments off is a bad solution.

Hey – we need to keep comments open so there are some social signals being sent on our blogs, but geez the people who are spamming comments are ruthless (and stupid).

They just keep hammering away and problems occur. Fortunately I found 2 really simple but effective solutions for out of control comments on WordPress blogs that you must take a look at if you want to save time and keep your sanity.

1. Delete Comments By Status – Delete all comments by selecting the comment status from your WordPress admin.

This free Delete Comments By Status plugin is so simple and effective it makes me feel warm all over!

Simply install it and never again have to waste time deleting thousands of comments 10 or 20 at a time (repetitive stress anyone?).

Now all you do is select Delete pending comments and boom they are suddenly all gone!

I wish I would have found this earlier. I’ve wasted more than my share of time deleting comments page after page.

2. Math Comment Spam Protection – Asks the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question. This is intended to prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot. Example of such question: What is the sum of 2 and 9?

You need Math Comment Spam Protection to make sure you don’t get as much comment spam in the first place. Requiring spammers to do math cuts the spam submitted drastically.

Now the only caveat is that some blogs won’t work properly. I am pretty sure it is the themes and there might be a fix -but I haven’t figured that one out yet.

If you run across a solution for stubborn blogs where you get it to work – please let me know!

That said it works on about 80% of the blogs I install it on.

So – that should save you some time waging war against those stupid comment spammers polluting the internet with garbage.

Oh – and I do have a request – what is a good Akismet alternative?

We need something like it that is simple and blocks out the spam in the first place but doesn’t have a scheme to get us to pay for using the plugin. I am sick and tired of playing games to get it to work and don’t way to pay to use Aksimet. There must be something else… right?
