If you’re like me you have at least a few WordPress blogs, right?

It’s tough to keep track of all of them and make sure WordPress and all the plugins are up to date.

It’s certainly possible that you’ve been attacked and possibly brought down by hackers. Especially if you do not update them regularly.

It’s happened to me – but fortunately – now I use the free Wordfence Security Plugin.

You see Wordfence does 2 very important things to make sure you are less prone to being attacked.

1) Rate Limiting – throttle or block crawlers/users that are going through your site too fast. Google crawler is not throttled, but everyone else can be!

Throttle Users

2) Login Security Options – locks out the user after X amount of login failures. I usally do 3 or 5 and lock out for 1 day.

Login Security

While you might not think you are being hacked or that your sites are prone to attack I would like to show you some of the email notifications I get telling me how Wordfence has locked out users that were attacking. Check it out!

My sites are constantly being attacked. Fortunately the WordPress blogs at least have this extra layer of protection.

Is Wordfence perfect?

Maybe. I don’t know. I just know it has prevented problems from occurring and also helps keep my sites and servers running faster and more efficiently as it slows down those brute attacks.

So – if you are not using Wordfence Security yet – I suggest you consider adding it to your arsenal of WordPress plugins on all of your blogs!

It just might save your butt!

Don’t you just hate it when the links in your blog posts become broken?

broken link checker wordpress

If you are like me and you have more than a few blogs, or in my case, hundreds of blogs, you can appreciate that there is a tool to help you clean up and unlink (or fix) all those broken links that accumulate over time.

Broken Link Checker will check your posts, comments and other content for broken links and missing images, and notify you if any are found.

It’s hard enough to keep our blogs fresh and current to keep Google happy, than to have to worry that old broken links that are no longer working are sending signals that our sites are not well kept or abandoned.

It’s especially important to the Blogging Underground network of blogs to keep our blogs as fresh and clean as possible. The blogs have had many thousands of articles posted in our blogs over the past few years and it’s only natural that links in the posts go bad.

While it may be natural – Google is always looking for signs that a website is stale and un-managed – so one of the ways I make sure the blogs are not filled with outdated and broken links is by using this easy to use plugin.

Broken Link Checker installs in any WordPress blog and will regularly check for broken links and send an email notification with the results.

Since it’s possible that some links may just be temporarily out of service – I always re-scan the links to make sure they haven’t come back before I “unlink” them.

That’s just one of the many things I do to make sure the Blogging Underground network of blogs provide the greatest value to our members who post in them.

After all – our goal is to get the maximum link juice from our blog posts – and keeping the blogs fresh and tasty ensures Google will continue loving them.

Broken Link Checker is a major time saver! I highly recommend getting this free plugin!

Oh, and by the way – if you are interested in getting links in our powerful network of hundreds of blogs – you really need to check out the Linking Special Offer!

Have you ever had to move domains from one host to another? Doesn’t that suck?

If you are like me and have a lot of domains which you need to spread out over multiple hosts for the benefits you get by having IP Diversity, you need a hassle free host that will not waste your time with their odd quirky ways.

> WordPress Tuned Web Hosting (it’s hassle free!)

bu-network-of-blogs

I am an expert at setting up hosting accounts with lots of different web hosting companies. Some hosts end up being huge time wasters and make me do extra work or even force me to move my domains elsewhere like I am doing now because a host changed their “security settings”.

If you have ever had to move several websites off of a web host you know how frustrating of an experience that is. What a hassle! And unfortunately it happens too often.

Fortunately all hosts are not bad and I do have one “hassle free” host I want to share with you that is a pleasure to work with and has everything we need.

> WordPress Tuned Web Hosting (it’s hassle free!)

The above hosting company shines for shared type hosting. The best thing about them is they never hassle me and my sites have run perfectly with them for years.

I never have problems with that host, unlike some loser hosting companies which will
make me do all kinds of extra work to keep them happy.

Some hosts do sneaky stuff like disabling sites because of what they call “malicious” wordpress plugins (they’re not by the way), or “suspicious activity”, too much traffic or any number of problems they want me to solve to keep them happy.

In some cases I just have to dump the host and move the sites.

There is nothing worse than getting set up on a host and finding out that they don’t want to give us what we need.

If you want to set up inexpensive shared hosting that will not drag you down and waste your time I suggest you check out this link:

> WordPress Tuned Web Hosting (it’s hassle free!)

The package they created for Blogging Underground is just $10.95 a month and has all the features we need.

I’ve been hosting with them for years and can truly say they offer the best shared hosting for WordPress sites! Check out what they offer!

Enjoy the holidays!

If you’re a webmaster and you have a WordPress blog or two (or 20!) you most certainly have experience with comment spam. It sucks, right. Don’t worry – it’s not hopeless – I have a couple of solutions I think you’ll like!

can-of-turkey-spam

Turning comments off is a bad solution.

Hey – we need to keep comments open so there are some social signals being sent on our blogs, but geez the people who are spamming comments are ruthless (and stupid).

They just keep hammering away and problems occur. Fortunately I found 2 really simple but effective solutions for out of control comments on WordPress blogs that you must take a look at if you want to save time and keep your sanity.

1. Delete Comments By Status – Delete all comments by selecting the comment status from your WordPress admin.

This free Delete Comments By Status plugin is so simple and effective it makes me feel warm all over!

Simply install it and never again have to waste time deleting thousands of comments 10 or 20 at a time (repetitive stress anyone?).

Now all you do is select Delete pending comments and boom they are suddenly all gone!

I wish I would have found this earlier. I’ve wasted more than my share of time deleting comments page after page.

2. Math Comment Spam Protection – Asks the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question. This is intended to prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot. Example of such question: What is the sum of 2 and 9?

You need Math Comment Spam Protection to make sure you don’t get as much comment spam in the first place. Requiring spammers to do math cuts the spam submitted drastically.

Now the only caveat is that some blogs won’t work properly. I am pretty sure it is the themes and there might be a fix -but I haven’t figured that one out yet.

If you run across a solution for stubborn blogs where you get it to work – please let me know!

That said it works on about 80% of the blogs I install it on.

So – that should save you some time waging war against those stupid comment spammers polluting the internet with garbage.

Oh – and I do have a request – what is a good Akismet alternative?

We need something like it that is simple and blocks out the spam in the first place but doesn’t have a scheme to get us to pay for using the plugin. I am sick and tired of playing games to get it to work and don’t way to pay to use Aksimet. There must be something else… right?

Launch your own press release directory just like PR Web!

Hi, its Mike Liebner here and I just wanted to share a website script with you that I just bought that will set up your very own Press Release, News and/or Article directory!

> Get the SCRIPT HERE

If you’re like me you are always on the hunt for scripts that will install easily and build quality websites which can run on auto-pilot without the need to fuss with them all the time!

This script is called Press Release Script and I bought it and within a couple of hours already installed and set up my first site!

WARNING: If you get the script do NOT set it to AUTO APPROVE as it will get bombarded by SPA*MMERS!

In general it’s really powerful to get links from within articles on Press Release Directory sites and what’s cool about this script is that there is a thriving community of people who have it installed which means that lots of other SEO people like us will hunt for it and submit content on our sites! Auto-pilot publishing!

As long as the content is not garbage – the links should provide some value.

If this sounds like something you are interested in, I highly suggest you get this script – it’s easy to install – I simply followed the installation instructions in the read me file and it worked instantly.

I didn’t hit any weird installation problems like I often do with site scripts. Lots of customization options and themes too, so all the sites using the script will not look alike!

Well – that’s enough to get you started – go look at the script and buy it if you want to quickly build a site like mine and have other people build it up with content!

> Get the SCRIPT HERE

UPDATE/WARNING: If your server has limits or restrictions on bandwidth it might be a problem if you get a lot of submissions. Only install this on a robust server that can handle the extra action. Also – do not AUTO APPROVE any submissions. You’ll get bombarded with garbage and once it stacks up it will be very hard to clean out. The solution is to start off by NOT accepting anything AUTOMATICALLT – manually approve or you might regret it like I did.

Best wishes for your online success!
